Darren Cheewah is a professional artist who was born and raised in Trinidad. His love for art began at a very young age. As a child, his mother would take him to the zoo with a sketchpad, there, he would sketch hummingbirds trying to capture their motion. She would also plaster the walls of his room with computer paper and let him draw his heart out. Darren grew up in Carnival, his parents loved it, even collaborating on a medium-size band in 1984 called The Other Side of Midnight. His father would take him to Harold Saldenha's mas camp. "I was always an ambassador to mas," Cheewah says.
CHEEWAH'S WORDS
Anything that I can put my hands on, I try to own it," he said, "from etching with lino to basic screen-printing. I get bored easily so I don't like to do repetitive stuff, that's what they have computers for - Photoshop and Illustrator. I'm an art director, as far as the industry goes. But I'm a tattoo artist, I'm a mural designer and painter. Often I do these pieces by myself- I rock solo. I do airbrushing as well but I prefer to be tactile. It's not the same as tattooing.
Today Darren, is a local artist whose extraordinary talent has been showcased in various ways. He has created backdrop pieces for 3 Canal performances, costumes for Island People (2006) and he also worked on 2008 Carnival King and Queen for the band D’Krew. He was the Art Director for Trinidad’s first soap opera
He is currently showcasing his first exhibit entitled 17W at the Gallery Republic Studio in St. Anns.
